Major Update And The Future

I’ve just submitted an update. Version 2.400 provides some bug and memory fixes, and support for the iPhone 5. The major change in this update deals with major improvements in formatting of exports. This has always been a weak spot of the app.

Version 2.400 improves all exports and how text is formatted. This is especially visible if you are exporting scripts. At this point, if a script exports improperly formatted, please check your original text and make sure you have the proper leading space or tabs. Auteureist uses a similar technique to Final Draft in that leading characters on a line are significant.
Now for the future.

The next version of the app will eliminate support for Auteureist Sync, the Mac desktop app. I’m getting rid of this because the app was created before Auteureist supported email or Dropbox. It was meant to be a stop-gap solution. Also, at this point no one really uses the Sync app—I’ve had one request for the app in the past year. Eliminating support will reduce complexity and the size of Auteureist which will ease the transition to 3.00. If you are violently opposed to eliminating Sync, let me know now.

If you haven’t upgraded your device to iOS6, you should do so before the next update. I’ll be dropping support for iOS5 and earlier versions of the OS in 2.5. There are a lot of significant changes in iOS6. Version 3.0 of Auteureist will require a minimum of iOS6. Supporting older versions would be impractical at this point.

Now, on to Version 3.00. The rewrite is moving along steadily. There is still a lot to do and it probably won’t be ready until the beginning of the new year. If I’m lucky I may be able to start using the app around the time of NaNoWriMo. I have been using NaNoWriMo as a trial by fire for all major releases, and this year should be no exception. NaNoWriMo helps me pinpoint usability issues and major bugs that may have slipped testing in a true writing scenario.
